We are a small architecture firm specializing in a few good projects per year within a wide range of budgets. Our practice is located in Berryville, Virginia, a small town one hour west of Washington, DC, and we are willing to travel to the right client and project. Carter + Burton has been at the forefront of the sustainable design movement since the firm was founded in 1992.  We are in this business because we love to design and work with people. We focus on new home design as well as residential renovations, additions and commercial projects. Our built work and current projects demonstrate the process of blending site, program, innovation, and craft in search of a hybrid vigor between universal and local intentions. Energy efficiency, air quality, eco-friendly building materials and controlled natural light combined with thoughtful design are the cornerstones to our approach. We care deeply about connecting a house and it's interior spaces to a site and we work to make those spaces comfortable and inspiring. Our methods, rooted in sustainability, have produced a consistent body of work that expresses theoretical enthusiasm and rational sensibility.
